Greetings and a Happy New Year to you all.
CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS
I was ill with malaria and cold over Christmas so my activities were limited. But New Year celebrations in church went ahead as planned although it was very hot. Being peace makers is our church theme for 2010.
GIFTS AND CARDS
Many thanks to all those of you who sent gifts and cards for Christmas. Much appreciated.
SECURITY
This is deteriorating as we approach elections in April. Maridi has remained calm so far. Bishop Justin will make the decision as to whether I stay in Sudan during the elections or leave for Uganda as many organizations are removing non Sudanese staff as unrest is expected. Bishop knows I wish to stay if possible. UN have evacuation plans if things get really bad - they will take all expats to their fortified team site near here and call in helicopters to take us out. Let's hope it is not necessary. The emergency bag is ready!
DAVID AND HEATHER SHARLAND
They are my CMS Colleagues who until recently live in Lui about 100 miles from Maridi. However they have now relocated to Arua in Uganda and will commute into Sudan occasionally, but are also building up work with Sudanese in Uganda.
IRISH VISITORS
A team from CMS Ireland are due to arrive in Maridi on January 19th for a week.
PUPPIES AND KITTENS
Six of the seven puppies go to new homes this week. The runt of the litter called Pixie will stay until she has grown a lot more - she is one third the size of the others. My cat Precious is due to give birth any time now. My other cat, Posho, who was sick is much improved. I have a sign over my chair which says 'My cat walks all over me and leaves paw prints on my heart'.
BORROWED MONEY
Pray for wisdom as I deal with four people who have borrowed money but are refusing to pay it back.
YOUTH DAY
January 1st is traditionally Youth Day and all collections from the services that day go to support the work of the youth. Wilson still needs to find more financial support for the work.
NEW CAR
Later this year I still hope to replace our Toyota Land Cruiser as long as security is OK and I can stay in Sudan. There is a British Company based in Gibraltar who can bring the car from Japan and deliver it to me here in Sudan.
CHAIMA COLLEGE
Bishop Justin is upgrading our Theological College and from this month courses are starting in English, Computer, and Accounting. Other courses will follow later.
WILSONS VISIT TO UK
I was hoping that my colleague Wilson could visit UK with me this year but God seems to be closing that door for the time being. The Visa Office in Uganda has closed and the one in Nairobi is moving to Addis Ababa in Ethiopia so it is almost impossible to apply for a visa, and in any case 90% of Sudanese are refused visas. Also with the present uncertain security situation Wilson needs to be with his family to do what he can to protect them.
HOME LEAVE
My next Home Leave is to be divided in two halves. Half this year and half next year. Therefore I expect to be in UK for three months this year from May, for MA study leave and also to visit some of my Link Churches.
MA STUDIES
November and December were so busy that I am now behind with my studies so I am keeping much of January and February free to catch up.
DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING BOOKS ON FOLLOWING JESUS
We have now started to write Book 3 - 'How can I live a life pleasing to God?' Book 4 will follow on 'Working for God'.
CMS FINANCIAL YEAR
This ends on January 31st and I am confident that God will provide all the money for my personal support. The target has been reached every year so far. Thank You.
PARTY POPPERS
We are not allowed to fire guns so when Wilson's family let off party poppers they sounded like gun fire. He escaped arrest.
All for now. Love to you all.

ELECTIONS
The month of November is the time for all Sudanese over the age of 18 to get their names put on the Electoral Register in preparation for the Elections in April 2010. There is an increase in insecurity in many areas as tension mounts.

CANON'S INSTALLATION
On November 8th I will be installed in my Canon's Chair in All Saint's Cathedral in Maridi Diocese.

LORD'S RESISTANCE ARMY
The LRA Ugandan Rebel Group which has been terrorizing Western Equatoria for a couple of years, are now moving North towards Darfur and Chad. Some smaller groups are still around our area. Pray for a solution.
MA STUDIES
I am now working on my second assignment which is preparing a proposal for my Dissertation for my third year. The topic will be looking at 'Is a lack of Discipleship Training the main reason why we do not retain some of our Youth in Maridi Diocese?' Does anyone have any expertise in any aspects of this?
DRY SEASON
It seems the rains have finished and we are now entering the dry season. Christmas is usually the hottest time of the year. Our local harvest is good this year and we are enjoying many fruits too.
COMPOUND REPAIRS
This is now the time of year to make repairs to buildings etc. as plenty of grass is available for the roofs. We also need to repaint the house.
CHAIMA COLLEGE
Bishop Justin is upgrading our Theological College to include extra courses such as computer, accounting, management, project planning, administration. When our young people finish at our Secondary School they will then be given the opportunity to go onto further studies such as these.
WILSON TO VISIT UK?
If God opens the way my Colleague Wilson may visit UK with me next year for about three months. Bishop Justin is very supportive of this. The problem will be getting the Visa - only God can provide, so much prayer needed.
PARENTS
They are such a wonderful support! Continue to pray for their health.
I am fit and well and very happy here.

Trisha's News for October
Hello again from Maridi. Here is the latest news:
ABNORMAL EYE
My little kitten Pickles was born with an abnormal eye. However due to prayer God seems to have healed it and there is no sign of a problem now.
RETIRED ARCHBISHOP AND FORMER BISHOP OF MARIDI
Dr. Joseph Marona died on 18th September and was buried in Juba on 25th. He has been a great support to me. Pray for his family especially his wife, Mama Eunice.
SECURITY AND ELECTIONS
Elections are due in April 2010 and already there is an increase in insecurity in many places in Southern Sudan. Pray this does not escalate.
DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING
The Following Jesus Part 1 Course I wrote is now being used in all 58 parishes in the diocese. There has been some very positive feedback. Between now and Christmas I will visit all 8 Archdeaconries to monitor how it is going. Part 2 is ready in English and we are about to complete the translation into our local Arabic.
ELECTRICITY AND WATER
The main street in the town now has street lights !!!!!! Electricity should reach my house during the first half of 2010. Pray for Bob, an American, who is in charge of the project. I hope to have piped water to an outside tap before then.
NEW DIOCESES
Nzara Diocese has now been created out of Yambio Diocese and is about 100 miles from Maridi. Samuel Enosa who is only 29 years old will be consecrated Bishop on October 25th. I expect it to be added to the dioceses for which I am responsible for the TEE Programme. Also there is to be a new Area Diocese called Bahr Olo which is inside Maridi Diocese. Another young man will be consecrated Bishop of Bahr Olo. Praise God for the enthusiasm, energy and vision of our young Bishops of whom there are many. Could UK follow this lead?
YOUTH CONFERENCE
Wilson is arranging this for November 16th - 20th. There is no outside funding so they hope to manage with just local contributions. Wilson would appreciate your prayers. The main topics will be Leadership and Healthcare.
CMS SUPPORT
This is the time of year when I really pray for God's provision for the money CMS needs for my Personal Support (which is what keeps me here). At present the total given so far is down on last year, but I realise many churches give at the end of the year. God has provided every year so far.
PHONE CALLS
Now I have a mobile phone, I occasionally receive calls from UK which is such an encouragement. The number is 00249917258143. Remember, after you change your clocks this month we will be three hours ahead of you.
ADDRESS FOR PARCELS
For those of you who send me parcels there is now a quicker way for them to reach me, as the small MAF plane can bring them by air to Maridi. For the address contact reception 404100
MA STUDIES
These are going well and I am about to submit the first of the four assignments I have to do by next May.
CAR
I would like to place an order for a new vehicle before the end of 2010. Pray for God to provide the finances needed if that is to happen.
DISCIPLESHIP BOOKS
I am trying to build up a library of Discipleship books - both about Discipleship, and also actual Discipleship courses. Do any of you have access to any books you could send me?
HOME LEAVE
Due to my MA studies it will be difficult for me to take five months off for Home Leave later next year. CMS have agreed to let me divide my Home Leave into two parts. When I have completed my MA Summer School in early July 2010, I will then stay in UK for another two months to visit half of my Link Churches. The other three months of it will then be taken in mid 2011.
God bless you all for your ongoing support.

TRISHA WICK'S NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER
Greetings to you all and thank you for your prayers.
JUBA VISIT
I have just returned from a visit to Juba, the capital of Southern Sudan. We were able to get various documents we needed, plus spent time in the Provincial Office with the Archbishop and his staff. At present they are unable to give further funding for the TEE programme and are unable to replace my Assistant Manager who died in July. Pray that God sees the TEE through these difficult times.
HOW SHOULD A CAT DIE?
The cat in the compound next to mine has been stealing chickens for a long time now. I have lost at least 20. The owner wished to kill the cat but didn't know how to as there are no vet here. Last week while I was away, my watchman killed it with his bow and arrow and then cut its head off with a machete (sharp knife). I was glad it was done in my absence as it was originally one of my kittens from about five years ago, The chickens are very happy.
DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING
Every parish in the Diocese (58 altogether) will start to use the Following Jesus Course I have written from September 18th for three months. Please pray for that. I praise God that CMS is able to help with funding.
MA STUDIES
These are going well and I am on target with assignments at present. But no good library within 500 miles.
ELECTIONS
These are due in April 2010 but there are may problems ahead. There is also a Referendum in 2011 when the Southerners will vote as to whether to stay united with the North, or to secede and become independent. Troublesome times are ahead. Pray we do not return to war.
SECURITY
This has been good in Maridi for the past six months. Pray that the LRA rebels do not return.
PARENTS
Please pray for the health of both of them. They seem to be reasonably OK at present.
WILSON
My driver Wilson is now also Diocesan Youth Leader and is loving the work, and we are seeing increasing numbers. My next CMS Link Letter will focus on Youth Work in Maridi Diocese. Wilson still needs funding so pray for a positive response to his project proposals.
CAR
It is getting old and needs more and more repairs. We hope to replace it during the next two years. I now need to buy six new tyres as the old ones are giving us punctures which is a nuisance.
KITTENS
I have five adorable ones including a little ginger one who is the runt of the litter. He is very small but has a huge character. He has one abnormal eye. I have called him Pickles. He sleeps on my shoulder. I am very tempted to keep him but can I cope with three cats?
BIRTHDAY
Many thanks to those of you who remembered my birthday on September 4th.
CARETAKER BISHOP
Bishop Justin has been asked to be the Caretaker Bishop for a new Diocese called Nzara which is being created out of part of Yambio Diocese. Elections will soon take place for a Bishop of Nzara. Pray for Bishop Justin as he takes on this extra role.
SICKNESS OF ARCHBISHOP DANIEL DENG BOL
Last month our Archbishop was admitted to hospital in Khartoum with bleeding stomach ulcers. He lost a lot of blood. He is now back home in Juba but only working for four hours a day. Pray for his healing.
CMS
Pray for the Headquarters in Oxford as they face severe financial challenges due to the global economic situation.
FAMINE
This year we have had excellent rain in Maridi and we will have two harvests this year. However only 100 miles away going east, the rains have been poor, and huge areas of Southern Sudan are facing the prospect of severe famine. It seems it is only Western Equatoria, which covers Maridi, Ibba, Yambio and Ezo which will escape the famine. No food is now entering Sudan from Uganda due to the problem of famine in Northern Uganda. Food is being sent from Khartoum but it is very expensive. I love this time of year with a mixture of sun and rain. It is very green and lush here.
God bless you all and thank you for your ongoing support.

TRISHA WICK'S NEWS FOR AUGUST

Having just returned from UK I am writing this from Kampala in Uganda:
RETURN TO MARIDI
Praise God journey went well to Uganda. I fly to Maridi tomorrow.
RETURN TO MARIDI
Praise God journey went well to Uganda. I fly to Maridi tomorrow.
MUM AND DAD
Pray for the health of both my parents as my Mum had a slight stroke on July 22nd. However when I left she was much improved.
DEATH OF CANON CHRISTOPHER
Until February 2009 he was my Assistant Manager in the TEE Programme. He was due to retire in November this year as his health has not been good. However while in UK I heard he had died in Mid July.
TEE ASSISTANT MANAGER
Pray as I wait for the Province to appoint another Assistant Manager and also find funding for the programme.
DISCIPLESHIP TRAINING
Pray as I train our Archdeacons and Rural Deans from August 12th-13th on how to lead the new Discipleship Training Course which we have written ourselves. Every parish in the diocese will then use it from the second week of September until mid December.
FUNDING
I now have no funding for the TEE programme and only some small gifts towards the Discipleship Training. Pray that Project Proposals I have written will be successful in finding funding
WILSON'S SALARY
Many, many thanks to those who have sent me gifts to help pay Wilson's salary (my driver) now TEE can no longer cover this.
MA STUDIES
The three week MA Summer School in Gloucester was excellent but now I have much work to do including four big assignments to be written during the next nine months. There are no extensive libraries here so getting resources will not be easy. I hope I will be clever enough to find some things on the internet. 50% of my time is for my studies so pray I can protect that time when there are so many demands here.
HEALTH
I put on a lot of weight during my time in UK and my cholesterol is too high. Pray I can rectify these things now I am back here.
CMS COLLEAGUES
Pray for my colleagues in Sudan - Ruth, Garry and David and Heather.
MA DISSERTATION
For this I may be looking at 'We have a problem retaining the Youth in Maridi Diocese due to a lack of Discipleship Training'. I need to start gathering resources for this so if you know anyone who has experience in how we can retain youth in the churches, and also the best way to disciple youth, then please let me know.
SWINE FLU
There have only been eight cases in Uganda, and none yet in Southern Sudan. No travel restrictions at present.
LORD'S RESISTANCE ARMY
LRA the Ugandan rebel group are still roaming around in our part of Sudan but not too close to Maridi at present. Pray for a solution to this problem.
With best wishes,
Trisha Wick

Trisha's News

TRAVEL TO UK
I arrived in UK on June 3rd after problem free journey. Great to be reuntied with my parents again who seem well.
MA SUMMER SCHOOL
I will be at Redcliffe College in Gloucester from June 15th - July 3rd for an intensive Summer School for my MA in Global Issues in Contemporary Mission. I have done the preliminary reading so the MA proper is now about to start. Pray that at my age I can once again settle into study and carve out the necessary time needed for study particularly when I return to Sudan.
MARIDI
While I am in UK please pray for security and well being in Maridi of my house, staff, animals and vehicle.SWINE FLUI am due back in Maridi on August 4th. Pray I can enter Uganda, then Sudan as they are threatening to refuse entry to those coming from countries where there is Swine Flu.
DISCIPLESHIP COURSE
The Following Jesus Course I have written has been translated into Arabic as well as English and is now being printed. From August 12th - 13th I will train leaders how to use the Course then all parishes in the Diocese will start the three month Course from the second week of September.
BISHOP'S ADVISER
Bishop Justin, the Bishop of Maridi Diocese, has told me that the most important role in my work as a Canon is to be close to him and advise him and help him to keep the Church in the Diocese on God's path as it develops. What a priviledge.FUNDINGThe money for my programme of Theological Education by Extension has now finished so I have nothing for that or my new role in Discipleship Training. I don't even have money to pay for my driver Wilson's salary (which is £130 per month). Pray that God will provide as I seek donors. My work is funded separately from the money which is given to CMS for my personal support.
HEALTH CHECKS
I have various appointments while in UK. Pray that I have a clean bill of health and that this will continue. God has been so good at keeping me ingood health while in Sudan.HOLIDAYWhen I have finished my MA Summer School I will be going to Devon for a holiday with my parents and we also hope to visit relatives who live in the south.
UK PHONE NUMBER
If you wish to contact me before July 31st please contact 01262 404100. As it is not Home Leave I am unable to visit churches but it wouldbe great to chat on the phone.
PRAYER SUPPORT
I am very aware of so much prayer support and am so grateful for this as well as ongoing financial support. Thank you.
PEACE IN SUDAN
This is very fragile. The Government in Southern Sudan has refused to accept the results of a Census which was taken last year. This may affectelections which are due in February 2010. In 2011 there is a referendum when the people of Southern Sudan will vote as to whether to stay part of a united Sudan or whether the South wil separate and become self governing. There are still problems with the Lord's Resistance Army and other rebel groups which are destabilising the South. Pray for God's over ruling in all this. The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for the President of Sudan but it has yet to be carried out.
With best wishes,Trisha Wick
