Message from Martongate Community Church
We are at a loss as to how to say thank you enough to ROGER GALE for all he has done and achieved at Martongate.
We have been so grateful for his Leadership, his vision. his clear thinking, his inspiration and encouragement to us all.
He has walked with us through the good and the bad times – he has been there – what more could we have asked for.
We are delighted that he and Angela have decided to keep worshipping with us and pray for God’s blessing on them both.

Martongate Community Church
Don Cossett in his book “What you say is what you get” says the following
“The bible says (Mark 16:20) that the disciples went forth and preached everywhere the Lord working with them and confirming the word with signs following . Jesus said if you ask anything in my name, I will do it (John 14:14). Who does the work? Jesus does the work. You do the asking, and Jesus does the giving. You do the preaching, and Jesus confirms the word. You say Jesus does. Since God does all the work, it’s important to give Him all the glory for it.”
On the opening day of Martongate Community Church Nov 11th 2004 Arnold Norton gave a very clear message for the purpose of the Church and he spoke these words of our mission, under our network mission of Jesus Christ for all.
Our aim is to bring the Love of Jesus into people’s lives by:-
Serving the community
Expressing God’s Love
Reaching out
Valuing every person
Enjoying fellowship with one another
This aim has been printed on the front sheet of our weekly news letter Martongate Matters for five years and although we seldom refer to it, Arnold spoke the word and God has done the work, mainly by sending people to us who have stood in the gap between the church and the community; by God showing us how much He loves us so that we are able to express God’s love in the community; by reaching out; by the church valuing every person who attends or has attended the church; by enjoying our fellowship before and after our meetings and in the house groups.
We do the asking Jesus does the work. The church has grown from 15 to 55 in 5 years. The church is reaching out into the community with Mums and Tots, Signpost, craft fayres. We do the asking Jesus does the giving
Don Cossett goes onto to say
“What you confess you possess. If it is negative confession the results will be negative. If it is a positive confession, the results will be Godward. When your heart gives a ringing positive “YES” to the Word, positive results will begin to occur in your life”
We have not sat down and done a sense check on our position with regard to our aim, but because we said it publically and positioned it on the front of our news letter every week God has honoured that, as we have strived to do His will.

Martongate Community Church
During Lent here at Martongate our sermon theme is what is, and how do we become Disciples of Jesus Christ. Whilst at the 6-00pm service at Christ Church a few months ago I was thinking about the difference between Passive believers in Jesus and disciples of Jesus when into my thoughts was that to get from a Believer (passive) to a Disciple we have to go from a B to a D which means passing through C, and therefore to get from a Believer (passive) to a Disciple the steps could begin with a C.
So by the end of the service I had in place that some of the steps should include the Cross of Jesus, the Character of Jesus, the Compassion of Jesus and we may need to take a different angle on the Church of Jesus if we are to become true disciples and serve.
Cross of Jesus (Spiritual Maturity)
The Cross of Jesus is a stumbling block to many, because it is about letting go of our own needs and trusting in Jesus for everything. Jesus says in Luke ch 14 v 27 ‘If you do not carry your own cross and follow me you cannot be my disciple’, and in John ch 12 v 24 ‘I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone, but its death will produce many new kernels- a plentiful harness of new lives.’ These are just two of the many references that Jesus makes to the cross. It is pivotal to our walk with him, yes it means Change, yes it means being Convicted of our own frailty and sins, yes it means Comittment, yes it means a Conversion takes place as you lay it all at the foot of the cross, yes it means Challenge.
Character (Life to life support)
But without the process of accepting the Cross of Jesus into our lives we cannot see how we can become more like the character of Jesus, 2 Corinthians ch 3 v 18 So all who have had the veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord, Mother Teresa said “ We must become holy not because we want to feel holy but because Christ must be able to live His life fully in us”. We sometimes need a helping hand going through this area as we come to terms with our new life and that is why the mentoring scheme at Christ Church is so helpful.
Compassion (Mission)
The Greek word for Compassion is Splancthna, which means not heart but bowels, so when it says in Matthew ch9 v 36 ‘When He (Jesus) saw the crowds he had compassion on them because they were confused without a shepherd’. Jesus saw his mission and the compassion deep down in His very gut made Him weep for the lost, this is at the heart of mission
Church of Jesus (outreach)
The church of Jesus, doesn’t occur only on Sunday, God is not separate from the Church neither is the Church separate from the world we live in, rather God, Church, World are all linked into each other as the Cross of Jesus, the character of Jesus and the compassion of Jesus, formulate our lives where nobody can see the join, where everything overlaps, which eventually will lead us into becoming true disciples of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Mums & Tots meet in Bridlington North Library on the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month from 9.15 to 11.45 a.m. This is a Social get together for mums with soft play for pre-school children.
Signpost meets on the 4th Friday of the month at Bridlington North Library from 1.30 to 3p.m.. All Senior Citizens are welcome to call in to reminisce, chat or seek help.
The Mens Fellowship meets every other Wednesday (10th & 24th March). All retired men who live in the Martongate Area or attend Martongate Church are more than welcome. For further information contact Roger through Christ Church.

Martongate Community Church
At Martongate we have just celebrated our first five years and the this reading from Isaiah was given to Angela on the morning of our very first service.
Isaiah 41 v 10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand
At a time of so much uncertainty and opposition we were afraid in our natural state but God was/is calling us in a supernatural way, He has strengthened us He has helped us and He has led us victorious in His right hand throughout the disappointments, throughout the criticism, throughout the opposition.
It also says in Isaiah Ch 42 v 16
I will lead blind Israel down a new path, guiding them along an unfamiliar way. I will make the darkness bright before them and smooth out the road ahead of them.
Yes I will indeed do these things; I will not forsake them
It certainly was a new path we were venturing along as it was the first network church of Christ Church. As a house group, meeting at Tom and Beryl’s, we had captured the vision which Jonathan had laid before us, we had to step into that vision having faith in the Lord and also a burning desire in our hearts to launch a platform to bring the Love of Jesus into people’s lives in the martongate area, also fulfilling a dream of Len and Ann Straker which they had hoped for many years earlier.
We were like blind Israel going down a new path, the territory and terrain was so unfamiliar to us all, but thoughout all our mistakes, thoughout all the opposition, those 15 members of the initial house group ‘stuck at it’ they knew that the Lord was with us, the support we received from the Bishop of Hull, The Archdeacon, the Rural Dean and the PCC brought the pervading darkness into light. “I will make the darkness bright before them”.
As Andy Hall spoke about the new wells bring opposition Genesis ch 26 v 20 but the herdsmen of Gerar quarrelled with Issac’s herdsmen and said “The water is ours”. Wells are blocked by relational conflict, All churches should drink from the same well, but when the quarrelling still exists despite many efforts to resolve the conflict we have to move on. v22 He moved on from there and dug another well and no one quarrelled over it . The herdsmen moved on geographically, but when Jesus came the springs of living water flow for all to drink, wherever they are, the early church multiplied at an extraordinary pace when the Gospel of Jesus Christ was preached, that is our only focus. “For I am your God”
The Lord has indeed strengthened us for that first 15 is now 50/60, All our ministries have flourished, Mums and Tots, Senior Citizens, Craft Fayres, House groups, Worship, Preaching, Refreshments, Data Projection and especially in the area of administration
We have also been blessed by many from the Christ Church network who have supported the music and preaching we are so grateful.
So what of the next five years
Isaiah 41 v 10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand
This isn’t a message for the past or the here and now it is a message for God’s Church here at Martongate, it is foundational. The well is dug the future is secure Genesis ch 26 “Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land”
Because of Jonathans vision and direction, and the willingness and obedience of all concerned we have a land where the Lord can flourish.

Martongate Community Church
The Bridlington Half Marathon.
On a beautiful Sunday on 18th October at 12-00 noon I ran the Bridlington half marathon (13.1 miles) along with 800 runners. The view across the bay from the leisure world was at it’s best with Flamborough cliffs reflecting the suns rays. I am sure we all felt good. The gun sounded and we all set off, up Limekiln Lane, along Wheatley drive, turning right along Martongate up to Flamborough. It is so easy to get caught up with the pace of the race, The first four miles are critical as to how you finish the race, and when everybody else is overtaking you, you need something to tell you that you are doing o.k. I run with a heart monitor which gives me feed back as to the pace I am running, I then can make a decision if I can sustain the pace I am going till the end of the race.
As we follow God’s calling on our lives we also need something to monitor our hearts, that is why prayer is so important, that is why reading the Bible is so important, that is why listening to God is crucial, when many others are dashing in front of us, and wonderful things are happening to others we need to be patient and accept that God knows what is best for you, when everybody else appears to be running the race so effortlessly listen to your heart, not what you see around you, monitor your own condition, that is the key to finishing the race, pace yourself so that burn out will not leave you exhausted.
If anybody knows the road from Flamborough to Bempton and the first part of Bempton lane it is all very steep. I arrived at Flamborough in pretty good shape (4 miles) and prepared for the steep climb that lay ahead, I ate some jelly babies and drank some water (Jelly babies are a good intake when running) before I started the steep inclines which is the most difficult part of the run. Mile markers helped to let us know how we were progressing, how encouraging to see the 5, 6, 7 mile markers come and go. We all need encouraging on our journey, we should prepare ourselves for when the going gets tough: Psalm 23 Even when I walk through the darkest valley I will not be afraid for you are close beside me (N.L.T.) The word ‘even’ brings so much comfort and reassurance and hope for us all, for although we may not recognise the Lord in difficult times He is with us, Your rod and Staff protect and comfort me.
The 8 mile marker was such a joy, after all the effort of climbing the hills, we viewed Bridlington bay, I am sure you all have seen it from this viewpoint, but when you have struggled to reach the top and the wind is blowing into your hot face the sense of God’s awesome goodness, creates within you a glow knowing that you have stayed the course, never given up, proceeded along the journey. James Ch 1 v 2 -4 ‘Dear Brothers and Sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know when your faith is tested your endurance has a chance to grow.’ We do not test out our fitness running down hill, it is tested when running up hill. Our faith isn’t tested when the going is easy it is tested when the going is tough, and we should welcome this testing with great joy.
It’s all down hill now, the 10 mile marker outside Headlands school, people are struggling with cramp and fatigue; through part of Sewerby park - I am encouraged when Margaret and Bryan (her Grandson) are there to give support. Out onto the sea front, the finish in sight only two more miles, I am on schedule for my best ever time for this distance, I am in the last 100 still running but I have done the best I can. Cramp is coming into my legs but I am overtaking some who maybe started the race to quickly. The home straight - I am running past the Expanse Hotel; Angela and members of my family are cheering and encouraging, Julia is there Ken and Anne and their son John (who completed the race in 1 hour 50min) all cheering. The man on the loud speaker system saw my race number looked it up on the list and encouraged by calling out my name, as did others who do not know me or knew my name. The race was run in my best time. Did I fail because I didn’t win? No. Did I fail because I came in the last 100 approximately? No. Do those who know and love me need to look up my name on a list? No. When you have run the race and did of your very best, do you think the Lord will need to look up your name on a list? No.
He knows every hair on your head, and He is with you always wherever you are on your journey through this life.
You need Pace, listening to the Lord, Patience, to wait on the Lord and Perseverance, through trusting in the Lord.

Martongate Community Church
The summer seems all too short and once again we are into another season, a season where we celebrate Martongate’s 5th anniversary but also a time when we must remind ourselves of the purpose Martongate and the whole of the network was started and that is to reach out to those in our areas of influences whether that is geographical or social with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. The network is not an alternative to Christ Church but an extension of Christ Church and whether you go to a network church or attend a morning service at Christ Church we are all part of the network.
At Martongate we move into a new phase as members of our church family take on increased responsibilities. Responsibilities and structures are put into place not as a burden, not as a main thing, but to have an order around so that we can all focus on the presence of our Lord in our meetings and in our community, so that no step is taken unless the Lord directs our path.
As family unit we know how lovely it is when the family get together in love and unity, there is a bonding together, when all the tasks are shared out nobody finds it a weight, and if the family see one or two people taking on too much other members of the family move in, they see it and out of love, they help. But the greatest joy occurs when new arrivals come along into the family, one of the reasons for the joy is that the family will be sustained. Our greatest sorrow is also when one of the members of the family decide to be apart from the family who love them.
This is no different than our church family we love meeting together, whether it is in a church service, house group, or a social event like a barbeque, but the greatest expressions of God’s love for the family is when we witness and embrace a new member, especially if they have never experienced a church family before.
We are not an institution we are a family with very special relations ships built on a relationship with our Lord, we do need to have some structure but that has to be as limited as possible as we seek God’s will, their is no hierarchy in the Kingdom but some are appointed to be leaders, as Dinah said in her sermon on Sunday 23rd August “guard the spiritual unity God breaths on us”, hold onto it, build up our church families on love, security and sharing and watch God do a new thing in increased miracles, increased numbers who our Lord saves, and an increased awareness of Gods presence in the communities we have been called to serve, with those we love and in His love.

Royal Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen
Mike Smith (a member of the Christ Church Network at Martongate) has been appointed as the Auxillary Superintendant of the Royal Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen covering Bridlington and Flamborough. His role is working with current and retired fishermen looking after their needs, physically, mentally and spiritually. He starts this role on September 1st and his contact details will be released as soon as possible, in the interim he can be contacted through Christ Church on 404100. We pray for God's blessing on this important role amongst the fishing community.
